THE GHOSTS THROUGH THE DOORWAY

When I was young, I had no great thought one way or the other on history. It was a subject I found easy enough but not one that called to me in particular. Traveling the world changed my view on this matter. I realized that though I considered myself reasonably conversant with world history, I was, in fact, sadly deficient. Everywhere I went I met folks who knew all kinds of things about the history of the United States, even things I did not know. Yet I could not return the favor as impressively as they could. So I determined to learn more. Later on, I would meet people who would help me acquire an appreciation and knowledge of Denver history specifically and Colorado history in general, which is ultimately how I came to be in this profession and writing these words.

History opens the doorway to so much. The study of history allows us to understand and appreciate things that would otherwise be lost to us, as if our lives were the first time things have been discovered, shared and experienced. The very idea is ludicrous: most every element of our human experience today has been experienced before. Not everything, of course, but almost everything. Retracing our history opens these doorways for us.

So, though I am an easily frightened guy who hopes never to see a ghost at all, I am nevertheless thankful to some degree to the ghosts, for in learning about them, I learn more about history.

Leaving behind the philosophies of many a three, we return to the general core of Denver now, though not exclusively to the Capitol Hill or LoDo areas. Here, too, I have found some more stories to share. Very importantly, it should be noted that there are some stories I learn that I do not share. There are a number of very important buildings in Denver, historic in nature and quite well known to be haunted, that do not wish to broadcast this fact to the general public. I do not believe in relating ghostly encounters that I am unable to substantiate through interviews or find in the public record and writings of old. Similarly, I do not believe in disrespecting the wishes of a haunted locale. If they don’t want to be known as haunted, I will not promote their haunted status. Thus, there are a few glaring holes in my writing. Born out of respect for history and my colleagues in my work, those glaring omissions must remain. Thank you for your understanding.

So, in the dynamic city that is Denver, let us start with the experiences of a woman named Delores.

Delores A. grew up in a small farming town over one hundred miles from Denver. Having failed to get passing grades at her mother’s alma mater, Delores’ parents sought another solution in some degree of exasperation. The year was 1961. They eventually settled on Barnes Business College in downtown Denver, which used to be located in the heart of town.
